This season has been frustrating for the first four games, but no game was as frustrating as tonight. The Bearcats turned the ball over 4 times. Two of them were inside the Oklahoma 14. The first was a back breaking strip as DJ Woods was streaking for a 77 yard TD on a great play by Jonathan Nelson. Nelson also stopped DJ on a huge pass in the first quarter that resorted in UC kicking a field goal. The second big turnover came when the score was 14-9. Jonathan Nelson once again made a huge play and picked off Zach Collaros, who was throwing a pump and go to Armon Binns. The third turnover was when Collaros was sacked by Pryce Mason with the score 24-22. The backbreaking last turnover when was DJ Woods dropped an attempted fair catch of a punt at the UC 8. OU would score on a Landy Jones pass. UC made a late rally, with Collaros hitting Adrian Robinson for an 18 yard TD, but UC couldn't quite get the onside kick.
There were quite a few positives. The defense gave up a ton of yards, 452, but it was a lot of bend don't break. Except when they broke a couple times. Maalik Bomar especially was all over the place, getting 11 or 12 tackles and forced a fumble. Landry Jones was on target nearly all night, 36-51-370-2 TDs-1 INT, for the Sooners however. Ryan Broyles had 10-100-1 TD as his favorite target.
Isaiah Pead had a monster game in his return from injury. Pead had 21-169 on the ground. He looked electric all night. Zach Collaros had 305 yards and 3 TDs.
DJ Woods had 7-171-1 TD, but that's not going to be the story when all is written. It's a shame, but things happen. In three years (or hours) this is going to be known as the DJ Woods fumble game. It is really painful to go down swinging to a very good, but flawed, Oklahoma team. Even more so when one of the best players, and top playmakers has two gigantic blunders that swung the game completely. If DJ doesn't fumble the first time, UC is up 16-14. His fumble at the end killed anything but pipe dream hopes. The Collaros INT was damaging as well, don't get me wrong, but when people say "Hey did you see that OU-UC game?" "Oh yeah, dude dropped the punt, that sucks for him." And it does.
This is a hard loss to take. UC played pretty much like we thought they would all season. This is what we signed up for. They gave it all. And they gave away in so many ways. DJ isn't to blame for this loss. It's not a fact that the offense would have marched 90 yards and scored. DJ got UC in position to score, and scored multiple times. It's just one of those shitty things that will happen. And tonight, it happened to us.
