Due to the crazy holiday weekend, hope everyone had a great one, I wasn't able to catch the Bearcats game against the Chicago St Cougars until last night. At 2 am. It was not the ideal conditions for watching basketball. The game was quick though, under 1:45. The Bearcats continued looking like the team they have looked like since the suspensions were handed down. Make no mistake though, UC just went through 4 teams who have a cominbed 41 losses. The Bearcats have things ramped up as they have a big contest against Oklahoma. But before we go forward, let's look back at Chicago State.
UC dropped 16 more 3 pointers. They hit 16 of 35. Take out Dion Dixon's 1-6, the rest of the team was a scorching 15-29. Take out JaQuon Parker's 0-1 and the team was 15-28. Burning up the nets. They hit 36-69 as a team. The Cincinnati Bearcats shoot at a high percentage and drop 3s like it's no one's business. This is the world we are living in.
The defense wasn't sharp, Chicago State went bucket for bucket early. But the Bearcats clamped down and held them to 30% in the first half and 41.7% in the second. Only put the Cougars at the line 6 times. Solid game.
The UC pressure ramped up 18 turnovers. Clarke Rosenberg turned the ball over 7 times. Everyone who played for Chi St had a turnover. It was kind of crazy. Everyone on Chicago St also made and missed a shot. In fact, everyone who played in the game made a shot.
You can tell how bad a team is by the open layups they give up off of inbound plays. Chicago St gave up at least 3.
The rebounding wasn't great. 17 offensive boards for the Cougars, 5 dead ball ones. UC had 13 offensive boards and 37 total, getting outrebounded by 1. Tighten that up boys.
Kelvin Gaines got the start. He blocked 7 shots and had 3 steals. He even took 3 shots, scoring 2 points. 3 offensive boards from KG. He didn't look all the way sharp. He's got a ways to go. Defensively though, he's great. 7 blocks. 3 steals. Dude gets after it.
Cashmere Wright is so cold. 5-7, 4-5 from deep for 14 points. He had 7 assists as well. He broke the turnover streak though, turning it over 1 time. Cash has been amazing. I always believed that he could be a very dynamic player, but good lord. He's seriously been on the elite level the past couple of games. He's getting assists, not turning it over and scoring at will. He's even chipping in the occasional rebounds. He's the man.
Dion Dixon didn't have the best of shooting games, 5-14. He had a couple of lob play layups. He was 1 of 6 Bearcats in double digits. Best friend didn't break out of his free throw slump. He didn't take 1. He'll have to play better as competition picks up. Positive, Dixon didn't have his head down, even though he was missing shots left and right.
Sean Kilpatrick found his stroke, 7-14, 4-9, 3-4 at the stripe. He had a game high 21 points. When he's dropping shots, UC is a tough out. SK was dropping shots. Good to see him back to playing well. Unfortunately, he didn't do anything else to add to the box score. 2 steals. Scoring was enough here.
JaQuon Parker had a very quiet 8 point game. He had 8-7-4 assists. Solid game. He continues to be a solid piece for the team. A steady influence. He's great.
Jeremiah Davis had a rough first half, 2 turnovers, but a good second half, 4-8 shooting. He hit 3 threes. Davis had 11 points, 1 assist and 1 steal. I've said it before, but I'm glad I was wrong about him. He's been dropping shots off the bench.
Justin Jackson was an explosive offensive player off the bench. Yes, that Justin Jackson. He was 4-4 and 3-3 at the foul line. Yes, that Justin Jackson. He had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. He did have 3 turnovers. He did try more no look passes. Didn't try any crossovers. Jackson had only easy shots. He made them all. He played good off the bench. Didn't seem like it bothered him.
Alex Eppensteiner dropped a triple 3. Points on heads.
Jermaine Sanders had his shot not going, 1-4. That 1 was a 3. He had a couple of boards. He was solid on defense. Not the most to write about, other than I think every Sanders shot is going in.
Holy shit Ge'Lawn Guyn. What in the hell was that? He had 11 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds with a steal. Only 1 turnover. Guyn hit 3s. Guyn took his guy off the dribble. Guyn passed up good shots to get guys great shots. He was great. Guyn was tremendous. I hope that translates to Oklahoma.
Christmas stuff for this guy isn't over. There are people at my parents' house, where I'm writing this on the road, as I type. I haven't even showered. I hope everyone had a nice Christmas. If you don't celebrate Christmas, hope you had a nice Sunday. I did. My present is all of you. The worst present ever. I mean the best present ever.
