Guest Post: Deveroe's Summer League Report by Bucky Cooper

Written by Scott on .

For the first time in Bearcats Blog history, someone other than I will be writing a post. Today's post comes from the man Bucky Cooper. He was at the Deveroe's Summer League, and volunteered a report. I appreciate it very much that Bucky took the time to write this, and I hope you do as well. Take it away.

Slats lost by 9 or 10. Not a whole lot of energy in the building tonight, the players have all tweeted about how they’re sore from going through the off season work outs with Dave Andrews.

Justin Jackson was not in attendance.

Ellis and Cheikh Mbodj are still out of town, both should be in soon.

Yancy Gates seems to be in great shape. He dominated at times tonight, scored when he wanted to. He posterized somebody on a ridiculous dunk. There were no TV cameras around so I doubt you’ll be able to find it anywhere. He was always guarded by someone half his size so it was hard to gauge exactly how well he was doing.

Shaq Thomas will be a good four year player for UC. He reminds me of Jeremy Lamb. His jumper is a little flat and could use some work on free throws but this guy finds ways to get to the rim. He can also dribble the ball up the court very well, should be a great addition to our fast break, which lacked a lot last year.

Ge'lawn Guyn plays with great passion. He’s quick with and without the ball, always looking to go back door and in my opinion is a great defender. I thought his flaw coming in was that he was not a great shooter but he had great form tonight. He also made some great passes, but there was the occasional misfire where you were wondering what he was trying to do. Overall he was the biggest surprise for me, can’t wait to watch him play next year.

Jeremiah Davis didn’t seem extremely into it tonight, but I see potential in him. His shot was off big time tonight, and when he finally hit one towards the end you could tell he was relieved that he finally made one. He has tremendous form, I just think with the workouts they had right before his legs and arms were feeling it on his shot. Davis is very crafty while driving to the hoop. He’s not the quickest of guards but his ability to drive with his left hand will make him hard to guard. It also seemed like he fed the post extremely well, which is also something I feel like we struggled with this past season.

Jermaine Sanders is not flashy, nor quick, nor slow, nor bad. He’s exactly like Rashad Bishop in my opinion. Left handed, plays good defense, decent stroke from the 3pt line.  Summer league is not Sanders style, but I can’t wait to watch him in a structured offense/defense. I feel like Mick will love him just because he has a really smart basketball IQ.

Overall I was pretty impressed with the freshmen class + Yancy. I don’t think out of the freshmen that there’s one player that’s way better than anyone else.

That is all, can’t wait for the season to get started.

Thanks a lot to Bucky. Bearcats Blog may be written by me, but it's for all of us. Blogs are community things, and your voice, like Bucky's, can be heard. Thanks again to Mr. Cooper.
