In one of the most shocking results of the young college basketball season, the Cincinnati Bearcats lost to the Presbyterian Blue Hose 56-54. All the credit in the world to Presby, who busted their ass the last 8 minutes after being down 15. Hell, they were down 7 in the last minute and a half and scored the last 9 to win it. Khalid Mutakabbir was the man today. He hit 11-15 for 25 points, including the game winning 3 with 7.8 seconds left. Great job, Blue Hose.
I'm trying to think of words to say about this loss. I really can't think of any that aren't fuck or some other version of fuck. Sean Kilpatrick drills his 4th triple of the half with 8 and a half to go to put UC up 15. Mick talked about how UC got up big the other day and let their foot off the gas assuming they had a win. That's exactly what happened today. What happens? A jumper, a bad shot by Justin Jackson that leads to a 3, a Jackson turnover and a layup and bam, it's an 8 point game with 7 left. Jackson redeemed himself some with a steal, running the floor for a layup and by blocking a shot.
The Blue Hose strategy was taking the ball to the rim. Look at this the last 5 minutes, made layup, missed layup, layup with a foul (FT missed), missed layup, made 3, made layup into a 3 point play. That got them within 1. Their gameplan was to take the UC guards off the dribble, and sweet Jesus did they do that. Cash, Dixon, Killa, no one could get a stop. Justin Jackson ended up trying to help and committed fouls. He ended up fouling out.
UC had the chance to push the lead to 3. Somehow Gates was one of the people at the top of the key in the free throw rush to foul. Of course he missed the front end of a 1-1. The rebound luckily went off Presby. Off the inbound, Sean Kilpatrick, for some reason unknown to anyone besides him, tried a layup. It was no good. UC didn't get back quickly and Mutakabbir drilled a transition 3. Cash got the inbound, drove to the left wing, got the ball deflected as a double team came and threw up a 3 that had no prayer.
That recap didn't really make me feel better. Things that this team does that are bad reared their ugly head all day. You had a ton of jump shots. I would say 50ish of the 62 FG attempts were jumpers. Including some ill-advised shots by my best friend Dion Dixon. His rushed jumper with 48 seconds left was going to lead to trouble, and it did. Dixon took a 3 that wasn't great as well. I said this in the last game recap. If you fuck around with teams like this, you can lose. I wasn't talking out of my ass. If your energy level isn't matched, you are going to lose a close game. UC didn't match Presbyterian's energy the last 8 minutes and they paid the biggest price. UC started the game hitting 1 of their first 17 shots. Sean Kilpatrick got hot for 5 minutes in the second half, and everyone assumed they had this win on lockdown. It's horrible.
I can't believe this shit happened. I honestly can't believe that UC fucked around and let mother fucking Presby-fucking-terian beat them. I've tried to not cuss that much lately, but damn, can you blame me? That's one of the worst losses in UC history. That's the second worst effort I've seen a Mick Cronin team give. Notre Dame in the BET last year would be the worst. When you play people like Presbyterian, you can't afford to lose to them. If UC ends up on the bubble, this is your bad loss that is going to haunt all season long. Hopefully this fucking bullshit wakes the team up for the game on Monday night. They've sleep walked through the first 3 games of the season like they were the best team in the Big East. Well guys, you lost to Presbyterian. If that's not motivation for the rest of the season, I don't know what is. Now I'm mad again. Fuck this game. Congrats to Presbyterian. You guys played hard and earned it. Unlike the Cincinnati Bearcats.
